Handloom sarees are entirely hand woven. All handloom sarees have their uniqe look. Handloom sarees are suitable for the summers. Today, every second woman in India expecially in East India is sporting a handloom saree of some kind. Hand woven sarees give a rich texture and finish to the cloth, which is delightfully soft and supple.Handlooms comprise the largest cottage industry of the country. Millions of looms across the country are engaged in weaving cotton, silk and other natural fibers. There is hardly a village where weavers do not exist, each weaving out the traditional beauty of India's own precious heritage.Almost every region in India produces its regional handloom saree and that is how most sarees get their names, from the place they are woven. In the world of handlooms, from Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Gujarat come the ikats, Madras checks from Tamil Nadu, tie and dye from Gujarat and Rajasthan, brocades from Banaras, jacquards from Uttar Pradesh, Muga from Assam, Kota doria from Rajasthan, Daccai from West Bengal, Tanchoi from Uttar Pradesh and so on. Kerala has started weaving cotton sarees of late. Its specialty is the Karalkudi sarees of unbleached cotton with rich broad gold borders and pallus.

Patola Silk


Patola silk is often termed as the queen of all silks. Patola sarees of Gujarat are one of the finest hand-woven sarees produced in India today. The place associated with Patola is Patan. Here, exquisite patterns are woven on sarees with great precision. Besides Patan, Surat is known for patola patterns on velvets. Patola silk has an exciting history. It was brought to Gujarat by the Salvi community of silk weavers from Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Design Elements of Patola Saree


The Patola was traditionally woven in a sari length of 5 to 9 yards by 45" to 54" width.
The range now extends to include tablecloth borders scarves, handkerchiefs


Essentially the design in a Patola are based on traditional motifs called "Bhat". These designs include "Narikunj", "paan", "Chowkdi", "Raas", "Chhabdi", "Choktha", "Navratana", "Paanchphul", "Sarvariya", "Laheriya" etc.
